Air McNair… T.R.O.Y. (February 14, 1973 – July 4, 2009)

Steve McNair while at the small HBCU Alcorn State almost upset the balance of powers by nearly wining the Heisman his senior year. His amazing numbers and play to match was almost looked over by the NFL because of the myths that black quarterbacks could not run a team or that you could never win with a quarterback who could run. McNair gained nearly 6,000 yards rushing and passing, along with 53 touchdowns. The Houston Oilers ( later Tennessee Titans) drafted McNair with the 3rd pick in the 1995 draft. He would go on to lead the Titans to 4 playoffs berths and a spot in Super Bowl 34 against the Rams. McNair’s play opened the door for other black qb’s who would come after like Donovan McNabb, Mike Vick, and Vince Young. He was a two-time Pro Bowl player (selected four times) while with the Titans. McNair also was the 2003 Co-MVP of the league when he had his best overall year in his 13 year career. He bridged the gap between Doug Williams, Randall Cunningham and Warren Moon’s era and today’s athletic quarterbacks. McNair’s career numbers were impressive which included being 5th all-time rushing for quarterbacks. Our prayers and support go out to the McNair family in their time of lost. His legacy will live on in his many beloved family, friends, fans, and teammates.
