On this date in 1837 Seminole Indian forces defeated American troops at The Battle of Okeechobee. The natives were lead by John Horse who a Black Chief by all accounts of the battle. Horse shared command with Alligator Sam Jones and Wild Cat. Because the government could not tell if these darker natives were “Indians” or run away slaves, In 1849, the U.S. attorney general’s office ruled that Black Seminoles were slaves by law. The U.S. government actively promoted slavery among relocated Native American tribes.

Even tribes who had never practiced slavery before were encouraged to do so. It was in the same year that John Horse founded the city of Wewoka in Mexico. It served as a refuge for runaway slaves.

Yesterday in Los Angeles the LAPD mistook KiD CuDi and his crew for burglary suspects as they left a photoshoot with NME on Melrose Ave. Five patrol cars rolled up on the entourage and temporarily detained them before the cops realized that they were not who they were looking for. After the incident, CuDi explained to NME that he wasn’t sure what happened.

Who knows, really, the story changed a bunch,” he said. “I’m just happy to be back. I’m a free man! For that moment I was not free. I was in handcuffs. It did not feel very comfortable.”

He added that he did not begrudge the police for the error: “We’re in LA, it’s a rowdy place in the United States, you know? And a lot of shit goes down. And these cops have to use force. So it’s, like, I understand that they were doing their job. I just wish we weren’t in that place at that time.” – KiD CuDi

Was CuDi trying to be politically correct with that answer???? I’ll let you be the judge…
